Artist Statement
Jeanette Jancius Durand
It is so compelling to me that what is directly in front of our eyes can have numerous interpretations. From simple images of lines and forms to complex compositions with layers and valleys, the viewer's eyes are drawn to intimate details or gross realities or down a path of bewilderment to experience a surprise burst of joy. I feel most satisfied when I have created a piece of art that reflects my thoughts and emotions and imparts these to the viewer.
The media I have concentrated on are weaving, fabric piecing, quilting, drawing, and painting. It is the most natural human sense of touch that draws me to work with textiles. My rich appreciation of historic and contemporary textiles stems from my professional background in textile conservation and microscope analysis at The Art Institute of Chicago, along with my studies in Italy. Creating high quality objects, with an emphasis to explore new and old media, is an important element to my art.
Whether my art work elicits a narrative, an abstract image, or whimsical image from a magical childhood, I feel an inner personal message has been captured. My images may relate to people close to me such as my sister who is a Peace Corp volunteer in Romania. Her experience reminds me of my own travels in Italy, alone amongst a beautiful landscape edged in the golden sunlight so far removed from my regular existence.
In 2004, I created "Embellished Visions Studio" to represent my work and to collaborate with other artists with similar visions and use of media. Through technology I can reach a wider audience and introduce my work to people throughout the world. I invite you to view more of my work at embellishedvisions.com.
